With summer in full swing, the dance charts around the world are alight with tunes that demand to be heard and blasted as loud as humanly possible.
One such track is the new release from British singer-songwriter Di, who captivated the masses with her smash hit “Eye Roll” earlier this year. This new track “Opium” has already been remixed by Todd Terry and Phil Marriott among others and combines an evocative and addictive chant with almost hypnotic and intoxicating loops.
As Di prepares to release the song on August 25, she has now released the video for the track. Unlike most artists who prefer to include sunny climates and tanned individuals in their clips, Di has instead opted to create something sure to provoke controversy thanks to its shocking visuals which, rather daringly, are 100% intentional. Don’t believe me? Watch the video and judge for yourself.
When asked about the track, Di said “Opium” is
“
inspired by Karl Marx’s analogy to religion being an opiate. It got me thinking that we all need something that will elevate our consciousness, taking us to a higher place, beyond the craziness of the world we live in. Marx’s analogy is contentious and makes people think/debate and I wanted to create music that had the same affect. That’s why we created such a beautifully controversial video.”
As an artist aiming to make her fans and listeners both lose their minds, and perhaps their inhibitions through her music, Di is a refreshing breath of fresh air in an industry currently drowning in cheesy pop ditties that are instantly forgotten. Her music, once you hear it, most certainly won’t be.
