One week ago today, the world was rocked by news that a gunman had killed 38 holiday makers on a beach in Sousse, Tunisia. Seifeddine Rezgui, 23, hid his weapon under a parasol before firing on those who were relaxing on sun-loungers or taking a walk along the sand. Today, Britain stands silent for the victims.
30 Britons were confirmed to be among the dead and today, after the announcement was made by David Cameron on Monday, at midday UK time, the nation united in a minutes’ silence to remember them.
Flags flew at half-mast outside public buildings, the thousands gathered at Wimbledon took to their feet with play delayed until 12.15, while in towns and cities across the country, family, friends and colleagues of the victims attended services and stood in reflective silence outside their homes and workplaces.
Among the victims were three generations of the same family, Adrian Evans, Pat Evans and Joel Richards who was just 19, and they have been remembered by their fellow Walsall FC fans while tributes have also been left outside the Sandwell council building, where Adrian worked.
On the beach where the tragedy took place, holiday makers and Tunisians stood side by side with dignitaries from both countries to remember those who had lost their lives, standing among the growing number of flowers and tributes.
The bodies of those killed have, over the past few days, begun to be returned to the UK, being flown into RAF Brize Norton where hearses with simple flowers on their roofs were waiting.
Everyone here at Popwrapped sends their love and thoughts to the families and friends of those killed and injured.
