Britney Spears has been one of the strongest forces in pop music ever since her debut 17 years ago. From America's sweetheart to paparazzi's #1 target, she has managed to be around for all this time and has built quite an empire, which the songstress and her team sit down to discuss in a recent interview with Variety magazine.
With millions of albums and tour tickets sold, a billion-dollar fragrance line, a judging role on the X Factor and several endorsements over the years (Pepsi, Super Bowl, Candie's, Hasbro), the pop princess is constantly extending her brand, as she currently has her sleepware and lingerie collection, "The Intimate Britney Spears", in the works and performs her "Britney: Piece Of Me" show in Planet Hollywood as part of her Vegas residency, which has already grossed more than $20 million. The show opens every night with the Britney Jean lead single, "Work Bitch", and the track seems to have an autobiographical meaning for Spears.
Her business manager and financial guru, Lou Taylor, stated that she has put her team together like a corporation and she's the C.E.O, explaining that she really gets involved with everything regarding her career, from music and shows to sponsorships.
Spears herself added:
"I’ve been very hands-on with everything I’ve done since I had my children, and it’s just really important for me to understand the big picture, where everybody’s coming from, what’s the real purpose of this shoot and this song, or whatever it is in that moment that I’m doing."
Her main manager, Larry Rudolph, took the chance to compliment her work over the years, and it was revealed that the entertainer renewed her contract with RCA music, despite the low sales of her latest studio album, Britney Jean; it became her least successful effort ever and her first album not to debut in the top 2 spots on Billboard.
Her reps defended the not-so-great sales of the record, claiming that as long as she's trending and still selling tickets, the lower sales do not affect neither her as an artist, nor her brand, while also stating that it's impossible to compare the current sales with those of earlier eras.
Furthermore, the pop icon did not seem willing to promote her music the old-fashioned way and go on tour.
When asked if she would get back on the road, she said she preferred her Vegas residency, as she can get there to perform and head back home after the shows. The burning topic is still the actual music, though, so Spears spilled some details on what she's currently up to on artistic grounds.
“In my off-time I do record. Once in a while I’ll just go into the studio if there’s a really good song that I have in my head and want to do. I think as artists you’re constantly in creative motion. If I stopped writing songs then that’s a part of me that would stop in my life, and I need constant motion… I’m definitely more in a creative space now. You have more time to go there spiritually in your home with a piano than you would being in a hotel room.”It seems Britney Spears is the living proof that if you want to accomplish things in your life and make a name for yourself, you better work, bitch!
