The world has been watching Caitlyn Jenner's public transition since her record smashing interview with Diane Sawyer. Americans knew her as an Olympic Champion and father to the Jenner-Kardashian family conglomerate. However, when the highly anticipated I Am Cait, premiered on the E! network last night, we were finally introduced to Caitlyn, her true self.
The premiere episode of I Am Cait opens with an emotionally charged scene, with Caitlyn's troubling thoughts about those suffering within the Trans community. She isn't able to sleep, thinking about those who have lost her lives due to suicide or murder. This scene sets the tone for the episode and series, showing that Caitlyn is not only allowing us on her journey, but those who don't necessarily have the platform that she has been privileged.
Right off the bat, Caitlyn acknowledges the position she has and how it can make a positive impact on her community.
In addition to being educational, I Am Cait is heartwarming and fun. The premiere episode gives us an inside look of how Caitlyn comes out to her family, just after her Vanity Fair cover is revealed. Her adorable mother, Esther Jenner, and her sisters come to visit Caitlyn at her new LA home. The moment Caitlyn and her family meet is beautiful and emotional. What's important about this moment is that not only are we given Caitlyn's perspective of her new life, we see how it has impacted those around her.
When someone who is transgender goes through their transition, it is natural that their support system will have questions, which Caitlyn's family definitely did. In a tense scene, Caitlyn brings in a Gender Counselor to help her mother and sisters understand what she went through, in addition to answering questions. Her mother is seen asking questions and trying to understand Caitlyn, which is a view we don't often see.
As mentioned before, I Am Cait has its fun and stress-free moments. Kylie Jenner, Caitlyn's 17 year old daughter "meets" her for the first time, greeting her with "Hey, pretty!" There's also an adorably sweet moment, where Kim and Kanye come to visit Caitlyn, and Kanye gives her words of encouragement and respect.
"You couldn't have been up against more...still like, F*ck Everybody, this is who I am," he tells Caitlyn during last night's premiere. We also get to see Kim go through Caitlyn's closet, and while her transition goes way beyond her looks, it's clear that Caitlyn has a fierce sense of style.
Rounding out the two episode premiere, Caitlyn visits the family of Kyler Prescott, a transgender boy who took his own life earlier this year. Caitlyn shares this news with her family, and opens up about her own suicidal thoughts she's had before. During Caitlyn's visit with Kyler's family, they talk about the importance of acceptance for trans youth and community. Caitlyn also visits a memorial for Kyler, set up by his school friends to show her support.
Overall, I Am Cait was a huge success and made an impact on its viewers. We think the docuseries will be one to watch, and will be recapping the episodes here on PopWrapped every week! Caitlyn is ready to show the world her true, authentic self, and wants to use her privilege for progress and growth. Check out PopWrapped's top 5 moments from last night's episode here.
