For many, Nirvana's In Utero is often described as one of the best albums to ever come out of the 20th century, and I would be inclined to agree. "Heart-Shaped Box", the sophomore album's debut single, was and still is lauded as one of the legendary grunge band's staple pieces, featuring a piercing guitar and vocal that perfectly captured the angst of the era. It's one of the many tracks that make it no question as per why Nirvana are the kings of 90s rock and roll. Now, perhaps totally out of left-field, American Idol Season 13 winner Caleb Johnson teamed up with YouTube star Marie Digby at the recent YouTube LA expo to offer their vocals to an acoustic rendition of the song. It's a departure for both, though perhaps especially Johnson, who's been known for more for delivering straight-up 70s-era wrath instead of angst in his vocal deliveries while on Idol. Digby's sweet pop stylings might not initially be thought to mix with the song, either, but she, too, gives it her all and does a decent job alongside Johnson, with a haunting piano accentuating the cover performance nicely. You can check out the performance for yourself below. What do you think?
