From New Orleans comes some very emotional and creative music, care of the talented Cali Blake. With her new album titled Cicadas In The Sun, Blake showcases the strength and control of her ethereal and haunting voice. With it’s simplicity in structure, Cicadas In The Sun feels much like a minimalistic expressionist painting. Every song sounds deceptively sweet, but the longer you walk the road Cali Blake takes you down, the more you see the emotional depth of it all.
Playing multiple instruments, Cali Blake is also an avid artist with a love of both painting a fashion, both mediums that can be found woven into the fabric of her sound. Currently promoting her song “Waterlines”, this video is a true snapshot of the streets of the beautiful New Orleans, and also what feels like a personal diary entry from Cali Blake herself.
Cicadas In The Sun is a dark album to say the least, but it also has a thread of hope that runs right through it as well. The songs are demanding, the lyrical content is raw, and there is no telling where you will end up emotionally by following the rabbit down this hole.
Tracks like “High” and “Transient Song” are instant classics of Cali Blake’s genre bending style. A mix of alternative, pop, folk, and blues, what Cali Blake brings to the table is unique to Cali Blake alone.
If you are looking for something new, something both raw and honest, and perhaps the next song to have a martini and cigarette to, this would easily be the album I would steer you towards. Cali Blake is an artist’s artist, a creative minded person that lives art and not just outside of it, and that passion can be shown in every track that can be found on Cicadas In The Sun, but heed my warning, this is not an easy album to digest in regards to the content here, so make sure you are ready for some of the darker emotions before you press play.
