The voice behind the venerated words, “Drivers, start your engines!” at the 56th Daytona 500 should be highly recognizable to Marvel fans as this year’s Grand Marshal is none other than Captain America himself, actor Chris Evans.
In addition to starting the historic race, other grand marshal perks for Evans will include an introduction at the drivers’ meeting, partaking in pre-race ceremonies and a ride in the Grand Marshal car during the pace laps preceding the race’s opening green flag.
According to Marvel, Daytona International Speedway President, Joie Chitwood III said, “What better way to kick-off ‘The Great American Race’ than with Captain America, Chris Evans, giving the command to start engines? We look forward to having him be a part of our pre-race ceremonies in front of more than one hundred thousand race fans in attendance and millions more watching on FOX as we launch the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.”
Evans joins a developing roster of actors, who are promoting upcoming films, serving as grand marshal including Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, James Franco and Nicholas Cage. Evans will be soon be seen taking his third turn as the Star-Spangled Avenger in Captain America: The Winter Soldier due in U.S. theaters April 4.
The 56th annual DAYTONA 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series begins at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 23, and will be shown live on FOX, FOX Deportes, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, in addition to a live stream on the FOX Sports GO app.
