Freeform's Shadowhunters is back for their summer premiere on June 5th, and new interviews with the main cast have just been released to tease the remaining ten episodes in Season 2! In a series of new exclusive interviews on the set of Shadowhunters with Hidden Remote's Marissa Messiano, the cast opened up about what fans will see when the show returns and shared what they're looking forward to in Season 2B.
Messiano spoke with Emerauda Toubia, who plays Isabelle Lightwood on the show. The actress revealed that the summer premiere was the most difficult episode she's ever had to film. “That was the hardest episode by far I’ve ever had to shoot,” she said about Episode 2x11. “Isabelle’s going to hit rock bottom.” In Season 2A, Isabelle became addicted to yin fen, and we will likely see her breaking her addiction early in 2B.
Toubia went on to explain that when that when the series returns, Isabelle is "just going to be focused on herself and is going to be focused on Raphael and her brother... I think that’s the path that she’s going to go through,” she said, teasing that she’ll be focusing on her relationships with many different characters in the Shadow World.
“Isabelle is slowly gonna get her strength back,” Toubia confirmed. “Slowly, it’s gonna develop, and she eventually gets to be badass again.”
Talking #Malec in 2B
“The Malec relationship is on a constant upward trend I think, and I believe that’s how it should be,” Matthew Daddario, who plays Shadowhunter Alec Lightwood, said in his interview with Hidden Remote.
He then added, “That doesn’t mean necessarily that everything’s going to be perfect all the time because you need to grow, and to grow you need these kind of little errors so you guys can adapt and learn how to work with each other, and I think that we’re going to see some of that in the second half of the season.”
Harry Shum Jr., who plays Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn also spoke about the Malec relationship. “I think that what we all wanted to see was them sharing experiences together,” Shum told Messiano, “and those experiences are what’s going to make them stronger.”
Both Daddario and Shum spoke on the fact that Malec in 2B will be realistic as possible.
“We’re going to see a lot more of that and them getting to do more activities together that would cause some riff in one side or the other being kind of pissed off at each other, but there [are] going to be some great, delightful moments as well,” Shum said. “I know the fans don’t want them to have any hurtful moments at all, but the reality is, that’s life. So yeah, they’re going to have to get through that.”
Introducing Sebastian Verlac
One of the most anticipated new characters coming into the show in the summer premiere is the mysterious Sebastian Verlac. “He is definitely a character that comes in and becomes a huge influence to the story,” Katherine McNamara teased in her interview. “He provides insight into some challenges that we have that he has knowledge beyond our own expertise and helps us to solve a lot of problems.”
Will Tudor, who plays Sebastian added, “I think they’re [fans are] going to love that they don’t know where they are with him, and I think they’re going to love that he is everything to anyone who he wants that to be.”
“When we first meet him, he is this kind of this swashbuckling hero who comes in and saves the day,” Tudor explained. “He and Izzy have sort of a meeting… he’s a bit of a hero in that situation. She has a bit of trouble and he’s very sort of conscientious, very thoughtful.”
McNamara also revealed that Sebastian is a character who will connect with many Shadowhunters at the Institute, including Alec, who we're led to believe could take on a major leadership role among New York Shadowhunters.
Climon vs. #Clace
In the winter finale, Valentine revealed that Jace is not actually his son, meaning that Clary and Jace are not siblings like they had been led to believe. So will Jace and Clary go back to being in a relationship like they had been in Season 1?
“Jace has an opening if he wants it,” McNamara said in her interview. “But he and Simon have also become closer, and he doesn’t want to step on those toes. He doesn’t want to get in the way of Clary’s happiness or of Simon’s.”
McNamara also added her opinion on whether Clary and Jace could end up together by the end of the season.
“Clary and Jace have had a connection from moment one. They’re drawn to each other; they’re connected,” she said. “Their chemistry is just electric, and when you have two characters like that, they will never be out of each other’s lives.”
Shadowhunters returns to Freeform on Monday, June 5th at 8/7c.
