It really bummed me out when I found out that the next movie in E.L. James' Fifty Shades trilogy, Fifty Shades Darker, was not going to be released until February of 2017. I've read the books several times (recently) and find myself getting pulled back into the story of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele more and more every day. In fact, Fifty Shades of Grey lives in my Blu-Ray player and I am constantly looking out for any information I can find on Jamie Dornan (Christian) and Dakota Johnson (Ana) online. Clearly, I have too much time on my hands and a serious obsession that might possibly be abated (somewhat) by this lengthy hiatus between the first two movies.
Perhaps someday I might get into a detailed explanation as to why such a polarizing book/movie franchise has gotten under my skin and ignited my (not far from the surface) tendency to use something up until I throw it over my shoulder like a crushed aluminum can, but not today. My interest in all things Fifty has been appeased by the fast and furious announcements of actors that have been hired on for Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Razzies be damned.
Of course, we can count on seeing Dornan and Johnson, as well as Luke Grimes (Elliott), Eloise Mumford (Kate), Rita Ora (Mia), Victor Rasuk (José) and Max Martini (Taylor) in the sequels but we’re also getting some mighty fine new actors as well. By far the most exciting news from my end was hearing that Kim Basinger will be playing Elena “Mrs. Robinson” Lincoln—Christian’s former Dom. When I read the announcement I was completely surprised by how perfect the casting was. Hopefully her cool looks and innate sexiness will add a shot of spice to the Ana/Christian dynamic. Shivers. I just had shivers.
However, the casting announcements didn’t end there. Bella Heathcote (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) has been cast as Leila Williams (Christian’s former Sub); Eric Johnson (The Knick) as the creepy co-worker you never want to work with, Jack Hyde; Robinne Lee (Hitch) as an executive within Grey’s company; and Fay Masterson (Eyes Wide Shut) whose character hasn’t been announced. I’m speculating that she may play Mrs. Jones—Christian’s housekeeper/cook, but what do I know? I’m guessing along with everyone else.
Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson will not be directing the last two movies of the trilogy and the reins have been passed to James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross). James' husband Niall Leonard has been tapped to write the screenplays. Because it was decided that both movies would be shot back to back, we have even had some announcements for actors hired to be in the final movie, Fifty Shades Freed.
We have learned that extremely handsome Brant Daugherty (Pretty Little Liars) will be coming on board as Ana’s bodyguard Luke Sawyer and Arielle Kebbell (Ballers) will be playing sexy and assertive architect Gia Matteo. With all of the casting announcements and knowledge that filming on Fifty Shades Darker has started, I think I might be able to now take a deep breath and enjoy the many other things going on in my life.
Who do you think the best casting choices were? Do you see anyone here that just isn’t doing it for you at all? Let me know in the comments below. In the meantime, take a look at this teaser trailer. Maybe we can keep each other company talking about this until next year!
