Hopefully everyone celebrating Thanksgiving this week had a fabulous time, and maybe you spent it checking out one of the new movies at the box office, and there were a lot of great choices. The new Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire and Disney’s animated musical, Frozen, are breaking records for a Thanksgiving weekend. According to Entertainment Weekly, the two films could be raking in more than $100 million over the five-day frame. People couldn’t seem to get enough of Catching Fire, which came out on top Friday, making $31.3 million. If things keep going the way they are, that will be sending it past the $250 million on its eighth day of release. Only two movies have ever reached those numbers faster, which are The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rising. Frozen was just slightly behind Katniss and the gang, pulling in $26.9 million on Friday (having earned $26.3 million alone on Wednesday and Thursday). Forbes said the filmcrushed the $80m five-day Thanksgiving debut record of Toy Story 2 from back in 1999, with a five-day debut of $93.3m.” The top five movies this weekend and their earnings were:
  • The Hunger Games: Catching Fire-$31.3 million
  • Frozen-$21.6 million
  • Thor: The Dark World- $4.5 million
  • The Best Man Holiday-$3.4 million
  • Delivery Man- $2.7 million
Others that came in just after that, included, Homefront, earning $5.5 million so far, and Black Nativity with $2.7 million since coming out on Wednesday. All of the official numbers and earnings will be tallied by Monday.
