After the announcement of David Letterman’s retirement, speculation has been swirling as to his replacement would be.  Not that anyone can actually replace this legendary host, but someone sure has to try.

The short list included Tina Fey, Craig Ferguson and Chelsea Handler; but CBS has announced it will in fact be Stephen Colbert.

“Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television,”  Moonves said. “David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night,” said CEO Les Moonves and CBS Entertainment chairman, Nina Tassler.

CBS has inked a five-year deal with the 49-year-old Comedy Central host.
