Celebrations erupted all over the country yesterday after news of the Supreme Court 5-4 vote ruled in favour of same-sex marriage spread.

Yesterday was a historic day for the people of the United States and all those who have fought long and hard for equal marriage rights to be given to same-sex couples.

As news spread of the Supreme Court’s 5-4 vote in favour of legalizing same-sex marriages across the United States, celebrations erupted outside the Court Building in Washington and shortly after were taking place across the country.

Back in February, there were 13 states, including Kentucky and Michigan, that banned same-sex marriages, but now all 50 will have to allow couples to marry,

In a show of just how supported this ruling is, less than 24 hours after it was announced, Nebraska, previously on the list of ‘banned’ states, has begun issuing marriage licences.

Speaking shortly after the announcement was made, President Obama said of the historic decision:

“All people should be treated equally, regardless of who they are or who they love…. this ruling will strengthen all of our communities… This ruling is a victory for America… when all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free.”

The ruling is a great step forward for same-sex couples with the US now joining the likes of France, Denmark and Ireland among others in legalizing same-sex marriages across the country. It is hoped now that other countries including Australia may be encouraged to follow suit.
