Ah, the 90s. It was a simpler time, when MTV would actually play music videos, and the original programming they did air featured things like the Beastie Boys fighting the Backstreet Boys inside giant anime style mech robots until the BSB were brutally murdered. Thankfully, those days are returning.

It was reported Tuesday that MTV2 has ordered a pilot for a revival of Celebrity Deathmatch, MTV’s classic comedy featuring celebrities animated in claymation fighting to the death for the amusement of viewers everywhere. The series will again be helmed by Eric Fogel, the creator of the show’s original incarnation.

As in the original version, the new Celebrity Deathmatch will feature animated celebrities battling each other in the Deathmatch ring, usually ending in some sort of gruesome yet imaginative fatality. However, the new Deathmatch will acknowledge the social world we now live in with features such as hourly Twitter wars.

Celebrity Deathmatch debuted in 1998 on MTV and ran for 4 seasons before being brought back for another 2 seasons on MTV2 from 2006 to 2007. During this time it spawned a video game and a soundtrack album featuring a Grammy award nominated track from regular Deathmatch contestant Marilyn Manson. It also resulted in some of the most hilarious moments ever seen on TV, such as Garth Brooks getting his head smashed in.
