British art collector and advertising executive, Charles Saatchi announced that he plans to divorce his wife of 10 years, Nigella Lawson. He made the announcement on Sunday, July 7 in a statement with The Daily Mail, “‘I am sorry to announce that Nigella Lawson and I are getting divorced. This is heartbreaking for both of us as our love was very deep, but in the last year we have become estranged and drifted apart.”
It has been a rocky month for the British businessman and Lawson, who is currently a judge on the ABC cooking competition show, The Taste. Last month, photos of the pair caught in a heated argument were published by several tabloids. The two were spotted at a restaurant in London and the photos showed Saatchi grasping Lawson’s throat while Lawson appeared to be distraught and in tears.
Since the photos were leaked, Saatchi accepted a police caution for the assault, but has insisted that the physical contact during the argument was just a playful tiff. However, Lawson reportedly ended up leaving the family home and has not been in contact with her husband.
With the announcement of divorce, Saatchi says that the reasoning for the divorce is because his wife didn’t defend him when the photos came out. She made no public statement concerning what was going on in the photos. “I feel that I have clearly been a disappointment to Nigella during the last year or so, and I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain that I abhor violence of any kind against women, and have never abused her physically in any way.”
US Weekly reports that Lawson is devastated because she did not expect that Saatchi would file for divorce. According to their source, the celebrity chef had hopes that the two would make up.
