As we previously reported last week, after much speculation it was announced that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson were going to be playing Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the eagerly anticipated film version of Fifty Shades of Grey. Many fans were particularly unhappy with the choice of Hunnam as Christian Grey and even set up a petition to get Matt Bomer to replace him. Have no fear Grey lovers because Charlie Hunnam, who will play the highly coveted role of Christian Grey says there is sure fire chemistry with new co-star Dakota Johnson.
Hunnam who is best known in the US for his work on the FX show Sons of Anarchy spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his new co-star. “As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us. It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.” Hunnam also revealed that he went straight to the original source to learn more. “I went and read the first book to get a clearer idea of who this character was, and felt even more excited about the prospect of bringing him to life,” he said, admitting that even his girlfriend loved the books.
However what does the star have to say about the inevitable sex scenes? “My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. It was incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man,” he said before he went on to add, “I mean I’m 16 and 17 years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady.”
What do you think? Can Charlie pull off the role as Christian or is his casting a bad decision?
Fifty Shades of Grey is due to be released on 1 August 2014
