Charlotte Awbery’s Stunning “Shallows” Cover Is Our New Obsession

Though Lady Gaga already perfected the song, itself, Charlotte Awbery definitely has us obsessed with her cover of “Shallows”. Charlotte also released a music video to go along with it, and we truly can’t get enough of.

Singer Charlotte Awbery’s life changed overnight in March this year when she was catapulted into the public conscious after a ‘Finish The Lyrics’ video from social media influencer/content creator, Kevin Freshwater became one of the biggest viral videos of the year. The video went viral across the world, reaching over 1 Billion organic views across all platforms and Charlotte fast became the star of the 3-minute clip with her breathtaking surprise performance of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Shallow’ in a London subway.

The touching story was once again picked up by media across the world, with Billboard, Time, CBS News, New York Post, Paper Mag, Complex and Business Insider in the US all sharing the news – alongside UK television appearances on ITV’s Good Morning Britain and Lorraine shows. A special live performance at a packed GAY followed, but then the live circuit was struck with Covid and a subsequent shutdown which we are obviously still feeling. As with all gigging musicians, Charlotte’s creative path had to take a different path, so she used this time to focus on recording and releasing her own material.

“My passion for singing can be traced back to my childhood. Whether singing for family and friends, professional gigs, or writing and recording my own material for release, I’ve been on this path for years. The reason, quite simply, I love it. I love the songwriting, I love the singing, I love the live performance. The viral success of the ‘Shallow’ video has been a life changing event, and a real affirmation that I am on the right path. Although the media attention, the TV appearances and the massive increase in my fan base took me by surprise initially, I now feel blessed that my singing generated such a positive response Worldwide. I hope it has been inspirational for other songwriters.”

“I’m sure people will interpret this video in different ways, and to some degree I’m going to leave people guessing for now about any hidden meanings. Lady Gaga’s version of the song held a deeper meaning, and this song is special to me for many reasons. Obviously it is the song that brought me to the World’s attention, but it is also a beautiful song and I wanted the video to reflect that, as well as give a nod to the past, present and future in my life and career… Making this video was a great experience for me, I’ve obviously never done anything like this before, and I hope everyone else enjoys the video as much as I did when it was being made. It was a challenge to create this video with basically nobody on set except one cameraman and a ballet dancer, but I thought the end result was amazing.”

We’re obsessed with this cover/remake and honestly, we can’t get enough of it. Check it out and let us know your thoughts in the comments section and be sure to follow Charlotte Awbery on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
