“I am a cock!” Proclaims Maureen Flannigan, former child star of Out of This World. Excuse me?

“I’m a cock too!” exclaims Keith Coogan, the former Adventures in Babysitting actor. Slightly harsh self criticism there, isn’t it?

But that’s not ‘COCK’ written on your tshirts, it’s CCOKC. Child Celebrities Opposing Kirk Cameron. This, my friends, is another matter entirely.

Kirk Cameron, best known for his role as Mike Seaver in Growing Pains, is an actor and documentary maker who has spent the last couple of years making waves for all the wrong reasons. In a March 2012 CNN interview with Piers Morgan, Cameron, who converted to evangelical Christianity in the late 80s, described homosexuality as being “detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.” Charming.

A whole group of former child stars thought so too, and so CCOKC was born. Remember, that’s Child Celebrities Opposing Kirk Cameron, not anything else that may sound similar. In a two and a half minute video, originally posted on www.funnyordie.com in April 2012, a group of former child stars have come together to make a point and take a stand. As Brice Beckham of Mr Belvedere explains: “Together we’re pledging to raise awareness about a serious threat to our civil rights… Kirk Cameron’s stupid opinions.”

The video, a witty ode to the right of the LGBT community to “fellate and cunniling in peace,” has been doing the rounds again this week. The reason? The Grammys.

With Cameron’s views on the gay community made quite clear in his 2012 interview with Morgan, it should not come as a surprise that he has once again spoken out following Sunday night’s Grammy ceremony, in which a mass wedding occurred. The weddings, officiated by Queen Latifah, included the union of several gay couples and were serenaded by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance with Mary Lambert of the acclaimed equal rights anthem Same Love.

Speaking in 2012, Cameron expressed: “Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don’t think anyone else should either… So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don’t.”

Fast forward to 2014 and Cameron’s views haven’t changed. In a Facebook post which has since been deleted (but has handily been screencapped and spread around the Internet), Cameron asked: “How did you like the Grammy’s all out assault on the traditional family last night?” With reference to the ceremony, he said: “Last night, the lines were drawn thick and dark. Now more than ever, we must work together to create the world we want for our children” Not at all coincidentally, at least part of Cameron’s solution is to be found in his new film Mercy Rule, which was promoted throughout the post. It would seem there’s no publicity for some like bad publicity.

Looks like CCOKC isn’t going anywhere.
