Chinese New Year Brings Big Money To Chinese Box Offices

According to recent figures, more than 38 million people in China visited the cinema between January 31st and February 6th, bringing in a record breaking box office of 1.4 billion yuan (around $230 million).

The films that had everyone rushing the theaters this holiday period were “The Monkey King”, a film based on Chinese folktale; and “Dad, Where are we going?” a film about celebrity dad’s and their children.

These results are an 85% increase from last year’s intake of 760 million yuan ($125 million) brought in by about 19 million trips to the theatre.
