The Oscars have now come and gone, and, still, Chris Pine was not nominated. In fact, he didn’t even attend the ceremony. That is a travesty. When it came to the Best Actor category, there was one performance truly missing from the group of nominees. In Hell or High Water, Chris Pine gave one of the best performances of the year. Yet he still did not get any recognition for it.
Honestly, the entire movie deserved more praise than it received from the Academy. If you haven’t heard of the movie, it is a simple story that packs a huge punch. Two brothers, Tanner and Toby Howard, decide to steal money from the bank.
Now, before you judge them, it isn’t just for fun. The bank is threatening to take away their ranch because they taxed them when their mother got sick. So, to get back at the bank, the two brothers are planning on stealing the money in order to keep their land that they found oil on. The whole film is amazing to watch, with great performances from Jeff Bridges, Gil Birmingham, Ben Foster, and of course, Chris Pine.
So why wasn’t it nominated for more? Maybe because it came out too early for Oscar season, or maybe the Academy just didn’t care. But, truly, it baffles me that Chris Pine didn’t receive a single nod. Especially because of how different and amazing he was in this movie.
Most see him as Captain James T. Kirk and nothing more. He is a Star Trek man, and that is it. But Hell or High Water proved that he is an incredible actor, and the fact that he will never get the recognition that he deserves for this role is one of the biggest Oscar mistakes.
