Celebrity chef Paula Deen’s recent racism scandal has already caused her to lose her job with the Food Network, as well as associations with Smithfield Foods, Wal-Mart and Target, and a suspended partnership with diabetes drug company Novo Nordisk.
Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, however, has spoken out about how Deen can be “redeemed”. Jackson has revealed to The Associated Press that, after speaking with Deen earlier this week he has agreed to aid her in her recovery following her past use of a racial slur, claiming that should she be willing to recognise her mistakes and make changes in her life “she should be reclaimed rather than destroyed”.
Jackson also argued that the Emmy Award winner should not become a “sacrificial lamb” over the issue of racial intolerance, and that he is more troubled by similar issues in jobs, lending, healthcare, business opportunities and the criminal justice system.
At least someone’s trying to help.
