When he was a sophomore, Lyle and some of his friends signed up to the bone marrow registry. It wasn’t until two months ago, when he got the call to say he was a 100% match, for a 28-year old patient, given just six months to live after suffering with Leukaemia, that Lyle decided, without any hesitation to proceed with the operation, knowing what it meant for his career as a track and field star.

Speaking to the Today show he said: ‘I was surprised, I was pretty happy. I said yes right away. And then afterwards I thought about everything that that meant giving up, but I never had a second thought about donating. If I had said no, he wouldn’t have had a match.’

On telling his mother and coach, his mum said ‘he’s my hero…I couldn’t be more proud of him and how he’s been so humble about it’. With his coach telling the Eagle Tribune ‘you either do 12 throws at the conference championships, or you give another man a few more years…it was easy for me’.

Lyle will be updated in a month, on the welfare of the patient, however, both men will have to remain anonymous for a year, due to law. Providing they both sign consent forms after the year, with Lyle telling Eagle Tribune  that he’d ‘love to meet him someday’.

What a massive gesture, to give up his entire career to someone who he doesn’t even know makes me restore faith in humanity. Everyone remember his name Cameron Lyle because this guy has sacrificed his whole career and he’d do it again if need be. I hope Lyle knows what an inspiration he is, being so humble about it all, there aren’t many people who would be able to make their decision on the spot like that, like his mother said he is a true hero!

Everyone here at PW send their well-wishes to Lyle and the patient, wishing both men a healthy recovery!!
