Community is back with a vengeance and its reinstated showrunner and creator Dan Harmon recently spoke about what was in store for the show’s fifth season, and in particular the departure of Donald Glover.
It was back in October that Glover poured his heart and soul out through a series of handwritten notes that he posted to his Instagram account, in which he explained that “I didn’t leave Community to rap (alluding to previous reports that he was exiting the show to pursue his music career) I don’t wanna rap. I wanted to be on my own.”
When Harmon was asked his reaction to the news he commented: “It was a bummer and a surprise. Joel [McHale], [Chris] McKenna (executive producer) and I all agreed that while we loved Donald and didn’t want him to be chained to anything, it would have been great to know his plans to fly before all of our contracts were signed.”
Looking forward, Harmon was asked how Glover’s exit would affect the plans for the current season, “But I don’t know how much it would have changed our plans or not. I’ll never know the answer to that question, because I don’t have a time machine.”
Speaking of the future of Troy (Glover’s character), Harmon admits that it will pull at our heartstrings: “there was nothing we could do to avoid that. In fact, the episode is about trying to avoid that. It’s about when a goodbye is so powerful that we’d rather do anything but face it.”
And what about Abed (Danny Pudi)? How will he react and cope with Troy’s leaving? “in Abed’s case, that could mean a great deal. Abed calls for a special game to be played across the campus rather than say goodbye to Troy, and the world gets embroiled in it and it’s fun.”
Donald Glover’s final episode of Community will be the fifth in the current season.
