Last night at the Grammy awards Fun. and Gotye were amongst the eclectic group of winners. Fun. took home Song of the Year for “We Are Young” along with Best New Artist. Gotye won Record of the Year for his mega-hit “Somebody That I Used to Know” along with Best Alternative Rock Album and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with Kimbra.
Now let’s talk about how they got here.
This time last year no one knew who either of these music artists were and their debuts on the charts were respectable but not anything to write home about.
That is until Glee came along and departed for its usual pop focused ways.
In the same award year, Glee had helped skyrocket Fun. and Gotye into the public eye by covering “We Are Young” and “Somebody That I Used to Know” in the show.
Glee was the break for Fun. and Gotye.
According to Deadline, sales of “We Are Young” shot up 1,650% following the song’s airing in December 2011. “We Are Young” first charted at No. 53. After Glee covered it? It went No. 1 and stayed there for six weeks.
Gotye also experienced a triple force of his song being featured on Glee, followed by American Idol and ending with him performing it live on SNL all in the same week. “Somebody I Used To Know” debuted at No. 91 in January 2012 and after the exposure? It went to No. 1 and stayed there for eight weeks.
This is the house that Glee helped built.
It also shows that Glee does not have to focus on major hits. Despite declining ratings, many people still enjoy the covers that show releases. This could be used to shine light on lesser known but still amazing artists as Fun. and Gotye proved.
After all recently did anyone know who A Great Big World was until Glee covered “This Is the New Year”? The show can be a jumping ground for new artists and genres to be exposed to the wider popular culture. I hope that we see similar success for lesser known and under-appreciated bands who let the success of Fun. and Gotye to inspire them to let Glee help out musically a little bit.
