“Kicking Cybermen in the nuts” may not sound like the most conventional way to save the world (do Cybermen even have nuts?), but it could be the way forward if Russell Brand has his way and becomes the next Doctor Who. Speaking to Absolute Radio’s Christian O’Connell this week, Brand said: “I’d love to be the Doctor. I’d be like a Tom Baker one, a long scarf, flouncy, wistful, quoting occasional poems. This is what the country needs.”
Speculation over who will play the next Doctor has been rife since Matt Smith announced he will soon be hanging up his keys to the TARDIS. The comedian is the latest in a long list of well-known faces rumoured to be stepping into the famous blue box. Ben Daniels (Merlin and Law & Order: UK) is the current bookies’ favourite, with other names to watch out for including Chiwetel Ejiofor (Love Actually) and Russell Tovey (Being Human). Comedienne Miranda Hart has also been named as a fan favourite for a female Time Lord. But could Russell Brand become a surprise favourite as the most unpredictable Doctor yet?
Brand is known for his extravagant personality and somewhat outrageous sense of humour, and has a number of acting credits to his name; including Rock of Ages (2012), 2008’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall and voices in Hop (2011) and Despicable Me (2010). He also played a prominent part in the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, as Willy Wonka. However would the funnyman be able to encompass the breadth and wisdom of a Time Lord? While his 2007 memoir My Booky Wook showed his darker and also more vulnerable sides, these have yet to be tested fully on screen.
One thing’s for sure, the star would certainly give the iconic role a different take: “I would just travel through time pinching people’s arses” he revealed to O’Connell.
Poetic, Cyberman kicking and flirtatious; is this particular Brand of actor just what the Doctor ordered?
