Calling all Vampire Diaries fans! Julie Plec gave some details about the spinoff series The Originals.
This series will follow Klaus as he returns to New Orleans to confront his past. Here’s what Julie told Digital Spy:
The Originals will be more grown-up than The Vampire Diaries, and promises it will be ‘darker’, ‘more gothic’ and ‘a lot more visceral in its violence’. We’ll also see more flashbacks in order to help us find out about the history of the characters, being “tremendously and deeply emotional”.
But that doesn’t mean Klaus will turn into a softy! “He’s not the hero of the show in the true definition of the word. He is because it’s his redemption that we’re seeking, so he’s the anti-hero, the villain in transformation; however you want to look at it. But he still does some stupid stuff!” Julie explains.
There’s a reason why this series doesn’t have the word ‘vampire’ in it: “We have the witch community and ultimately down the road the werewolf community that we’ll explore with Hayley’s quest to find answers about her family”.
Speaking of the characters, how do you find an adversary to such a strong character as Klaus? And that’s how Marcel [Charles Michael Davis] appeared: “Klaus will lure you in with a sly little grin, whereas Marcel will open you with a big warm smile but then – boom – stab you in the back” Julie revealed.
And finally, how long could the series go? “New Orleans and the French Quarter specifically is its own version of a small town, so if you think small-town drama, family drama and then you layer supernatural on top of that and weave it through, you can do that forever. So we’re not going to put any limits on ourselves as far as how long we think the series could go”.
The Originals premieres on The CW on October 15th.
