Yours truly is here with all of you "Dancing with the Stars" fans and it's time to kick off a brand new season. With changes to the judging panel (hello Julianne Hough!) and 13 more celebrities, it was bound to get exciting...
And we weren't disappointed!
You want to get this going right?
Here we go!
1. Antonio Sabato and Cheryl Burke - Cha Cha
Kicking off the season with a bit of sex appeal, the former "General Hospital" star and his partner were steaming up the dance floor. I was afraid Bruno was going to jump out of his chair, but the reaction from the judges was pretty unanimous:
First out the gate though, the judges were impressed and they received three 6's and a 7 from Bruno giving them a 25 out of 40.
2. Lea Thompson and newcomer Artem Chigvintsey - Foxtrot
It was revealed in the video package that Lea was a former ballet dancer, so would that help them?
It definitely did!!
The judges were all over the moon about how beautiful the dance was, and I couldn't agree more. The only complaint the judges had was a bit of a problem with posture coming into the hold. Carrie Ann and Len however, were pretty much ignoring the posture comments because they absolutely loved the routine.
The acclaim continued with four 8's from the judges giving them a fantastic 32 out of 40!
3. Janel Parrish and Val Chmerkovskiy - Jive
This little 'Liar' can MOVE!
With an explosive routine set to the music of "Bang Bang" by Jessie J/Ariana Grande/Nicki Minaj, Janel and Val were absolutely dynamite on the dance floor and once again, the judges were all in agreement that while she was a tad out of control on certain moves, it really worked. I have to keep things real though you guys, and I couldn't get past the facial expressions Janel was making during the routine. Kind of distracting, however, the dance itself?
A score of three 7's and an 8 from Bruno gave them 29 out of 40!
4. Lolo Jones and newcomer Keo Motsepe - Cha Cha
It was only a matter of time before something fell apart, and unfortunately it was Lolo and Keo. Yours truly felt that Lolo was way too stiff and she seemed extremely nervous about being on the dance floor. She acknowledged it right out the gate that she lost the her placing during the intro and never recovered. Lolo seemed genuinely disappointed with herself, and unfortunately her scores were pretty telling of the dance. Carrie Ann and Len gave her a 6, while Bruno and Julianne went lower with 5's, giving them 22 out of 40.
5. Betsey Johnson and Tony Dovolani - Jive
This woman is 72 years old. We all need to remember that....
Because she was doing a really good job, until a stray feathered boa got tangled in her feet and the dance fell apart. The energy out of Betsey in infectious, and she's highly entertaining so hopefully America gives her and Tony another chance.
The judges couldn't ignore the problems during the routine, and all delivered 5's giving them only 20 out of 40.
6. Tavis Smiley and Sharna Burgess - Foxtrot
The talk show host revealed he was doing the show because he was turning 50 shortly, and he didn't show any signs of slowing down!! The dance was upbeat, had a tad bit of a comedic side which was very welcomed, and he had FUN! The moves seemed natural for Tavis and he received relatively positive reviews , which garnered him and Sharna three 7's and an 8 from new judge Julianne Hough giving them 29 out of 40.
7. Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas - Cha Cha
The 'Duck Dynasty' daughter was a little firecracker on the dance floor, and I'm I completely agree with Carrie Ann. If she becomes a tad more polished, she could be a SERIOUS contender. The way she moved was completely natural and it showed.
The performance also gave them the highest routine of the night, with 8's from Carrie Ann and Len, and 9's from Julianne and Bruno giving them 34 out of 40!
8. Michael Waltrip and Emma Slater - Cha Cha
While Carrie Ann and Julianne praised him for having fun right out gate, Len and Bruno couldn't ignore that he never really delivered any steps. It all just coasted along before the ending, and I have to agree with them. I can see Michael being the comic installment this season, but if he wants to be a serious contender, he needs to show more.
The judges delivered three 6's and a 7 from Carrie Ann giving them 25 out of 40.
9. Jonathan Bennett and Allison Holker - Jive
The "Mean Girls" alum had quite the reason for joining the show:
He lost his Dad only 2 months ago, and it was their favorite show to watch. The 2 are quite the pair and their chemistry is already off the charts. Jonathan hit all the right kicks and spins and his lines were fantastic. Carrie Ann called them incredibly polished right from the start and that could be a very telling sign of how they do this season.
I have to also confess that Allison was my favorite contestant from "So You Think You Can Dance" back when she first appeared in season 2, so it's amazing to see her on the show! Two 7's from Julianne and Len and 8's from Carrie Ann and Bruno gave them a great 30 out of 40 the first performance!
10. Tommy Chong and Peta Murgatroyd - Jive
The original stoner (his words not mine!) and season 14 champion were absolutely a hoot right from the start and I never wanted it to end!! Tommy really looked to give it his all and I can't wait to see what he does next.
The judges delivered three 7's with Len giving them a 6. A total of 27 out of 40 completely shocked me. I have to be really honest that I wasn't expecting him to be as good as he was, but I can't wait to see more!
11. Randy Couture and Karina Smirnoff - Foxtrot
Who knew the legendary UFC fighter had this in him!?
Randy floated across the dance floor in his Foxtrot with Karina and completely blew away my expectations. Was it technically perfect? Well, I can't judge that because I'm not a professional, but I was damn impressed!
Carrie Ann was completely flustered from the dance, calling it incredible while Julianne echoing her sentiments.
They managed to score three 8's and a 7 from Len giving them 31 out of 40.
12. Bethany Mota and Derek Hough - Jive
The YouTube sensation and former champion managed to kick off their time on the show in grand fashion with four 8's giving them 32 out of 40, and the judges clearly loved them. Their tiniest complaint was that the energy dipped when they switched holds, but the consensus was that she could be a bona fide star if she keeps this up!
Anyone still find it a tad strange when Julianne critiques her own brother!?
13. Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson - Jive
And leave it to the Tom Jones king!!! If you don't know what that means, we can't be friends.
The "Fresh Prince" star didn't miss a beat with his and Witney's killer performance and I cannot rave about it enough. Talk about closing the show with a bang.......
FOUR 9'S!!! Highest performance rating of the night!!
