As an artist whose lyrics often reflect her own personal experiences, Deanna Devore’s songs are deeply relatable to listeners and her previous releases have connected strongly with her growing fanbase. Inspired by solo artists and bands whose music spans several genres including R&B and jazz, she’s also an artist who doesn’t limit herself, instead preferring to test and push the boundaries of what she can do as a song-writer and performer. Having recently dropped her new single “Love Again”, Deanna spoke to PopWrapped about past and upcoming collaborations and the one artist she’d love to work with.
Your new single “Love Again” features fellow Chicago musician D’Zhari. How did that collaboration come about?
I was looking for a female R&B singer to feature on the track and asked D.Lylez – who sang on my previous single – if he knew anyone he could recommend and he recommended her. So, I reached out to her and that’s how that came to be!
The song is about the emotions you face at the end of a relationship. Does this come from personal experiences?
Yes, definitely. I think the song deals with emotions a lot of us can relate to.
Your music features honest song-writing – do you think that music is the best way for you to express your feelings?
Yes, what I love about songs is that you can express feelings not just in the lyrics, but in the emotion of the music.
You split your time between Toronto and Chicago – do either of these cities influence your sound?
They are both great cities, but no I think my sound would be what it is regardless of where I’m living.
Your previous single “Lately” featured R&B artist D.Lylez, who some may recognize from The Voice. Can we expect to see more collaborations in the future?
Yes! My next single is actually going to be another one featuring D.Lylez. Love that guy.
If you could collaborate with any musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Tom Misch. I really admire his style of guitar playing and his chord voicings.
Finally then, can you tease anything regarding what’s next for you?
I’m currently focusing on the composer aspect of the music industry – I’ll be scoring a full length documentary soon but what you can expect from me will be an upcoming R&B single with D.Lylez.
