The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy Hilariously Trolls Oregon Militia

Colin Meloy, lead singer of The Decemberists, poked fun at the Oregon militia by creating the hashtag #BundyEroticFanFic and inspiring a trend.

Colin Meloy is the lead singer of the indie-folk band The Decembrists, and earlier this week he gave Twitter a wonderful gift: a brilliant hashtag poking fun at the Oregon militia standoff.

For those who aren’t up-to-date on current events, a group of armed protestors took over a federal building and have occupied it for several days, despite being in need of snacks, French Vanilla creamer, and other supplies. The militants/terrorists are lead by Ammon Bundy, and they’ve told reporters that they are prepared to “kill and be killed if necessary” to defend their cause. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because his father, Cliven Bundy, was involved in the same sort of standoff with authorities less than two years ago.

The Decembrists are a left-leaning indie-folk band from Portland, Oregon who may be known for their 2005 single “Sixteen Military Wives”. The song itself protests the Iraq War and takes digs at the media for lazy reporting. The video features a high school model UN, with America being represented by the school bully.

Meloy decided to poke fun at the situation by creating the hashtag #BundyEroticFanFic, and posting some of his own 140-character Bundy-related ertoic tweets. It didn’t take long before his fans took up the banner, and soon enough #BundyEroticFanFic began trending on Twitter.

Since it’s the internet, the hashtag did contain a number of homophobic tweets, and more than a few tweets that boiled down to “being gay is something to poke fun at”. Obviously, one’s sexual orientation should never be something to mock, or used as a reason to respect that person less.

However, there were also a few brilliant gems that did seem to capture the spirit of Meloy’s endeavor without being homophobic in nature:

After finding out that #BundyEroticFanFic was trending, Meloy tweeted that he was “feeling pretty proud of my country tonight” and commended his followers on their creative tweets.

He later told The Daily Beast that the hashtag “belongs to the world now. Let it grow like a fresh field of alfalfa in the spring”.
