Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel Steps Down Amid Tension On Capitol Hill

In the unrelenting world of politics, there are bound to be employment casualties, and Chuck Hagel is the latest one to take the hit.

The now former Defense Secretary was basically pressured out of his position and spoke yesterday of his resignation. Two years ago Hagel was hired in by the President, who in the end apparently was one of the people pushing Hagel out of the position.

Hagel was notoriously passive and full of delays in his efforts concerning prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. He also butted heads over Syria with the National Security Advisor, Susan E. Rice, who happens to be in the little niche of White House bffs. In the end, it seems like Hagel was the odd man out, who couldn’t ever get the password to get inside the political tree fort.

The icy exchange of goodbyes between the President and Hagel yesterday only further proved the unfriendly split, as Obama attempted eye contact with Hagel during his speech but Hagel decided to just stare straight ahead. I can’t say I blame Hagel though, it’s hard to break into a tight-knit group and even more so when you mouth off and piss off part of that group only to have the person who hired you… fire you.

Even though there was tension, Hagel did an excellent job of managing the Pentagon, and even more so after being at war for so many years. He is a combat veteran, the first to hold this position, which helped in his tenure during the wartime to peacetime transition in the last couple years. He was lauded for handling a shrinking budget as best as anyone could.

There is no word yet who will be Hagel’s replacement and he will stay on until the next Defense Secretary is chosen. Whoever decides to put on these shoes though better have a very thick skin – the next two years in American politics is bound to be, quite frankly, a disaster. Grab your popcorn, friends, the show is about to begin.
