After losing her father last week, Demi Lovato has channelled her grief into launching a treatment scholarship in her father’s memory. “I believe everything happens for a reason and I want some good to come out of my father’s passing” Demi tweeted. “So I am launching the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program to help to pay for treatment expenses at Cast Recovery for someone who needs help” she added.
A statement on the Cast Recovery Services website says, The Lovato Treatment Scholarship will cover expenses for someone struggling with mental health and/or addiction issues, including the costs for one of CAST Recovery’s transitional living homes, as well as the clinical services provided at CAST’s outpatient program.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Lovato spoke about her estrangement from her father, Patrick Lovato, saying: “My father and I didn’t have the most ideal relationship but at the end of the day he’s still my dad.”
Demi and her father hadn’t spoken for nearly half a decade, after she revealed that she cut off communication with him after he let her down time and time again.
Demi went on to explain how her father’s passing has inspired her to take a more hands on role in raising awareness and helping others with conditions similar to hers and her father’s. She said: “My father dealt with mental illnesses and he wasn’t able to function in society and that happens to a lot of people.”
The singer was sure to let the viewers know, that while she may not have had the best relationship with her father, he was still “a wonderful person”.
