A very strange and sad twist has taken place in the saga of Clay Aiken’s venture into the political arena. Keith Crisco, Aiken’s opponent in the race for a North Carolina House seat, died suddenly on May 12th. The 71-year-old reportedly died from injuries after falling at his home.

The former American Idol star had been locked in a Democratic primary race with Crisco which ended in a “too close to call” result last Tuesday. Aiken and Crisco were awaiting an official canvassing which would have been held May 13th. Aiken led Crisco by 369 votes for the Democratic nomination in North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District.

Crisco, a former North Carolina Secretary of Commerce, was the founder of Asheboro Elastics, a textile company with 200 employees. Crisco is survived by his wife, three children, and six grandchildren.

Aiken has announced that he is halting all campaign activities “as we pray for his family and friends.” He described Crisco as “a gentleman, a good and honorable man and an extraordinary public servant” and said that he “was honored to know him.”
