Following the slew of sexual harrasment charges against Harvey Weinstein, the Directors Guild of America has filed disciplinary charges against him. 

According to DGA President Thomas Schlamme, the guild filed these actions on October 13, 2017. Because of the publicity this particular case, the guild which does not normally make remarks about “internal union matters, [and] has decided to make an exception in this case.”

“As directors and team members who solve problems for a living, we are committed to eradicating the scourge of sexual harassment on our industry,” the statement read, with Schlamme adding the Weinstein controversy had inspired him “to look inside” himself. 

“Unless we recognize what has become so acceptable in our culture and how we possibly, even unconsciously, are participants, everything else will be meaningless.”

The guild condemned sexual harrassment in its statement at the Board of Directors meeting in New York City on Saturday. They went on to say that this issue went beyond “one person” and that the industry should break its “shameful code of complicity.”

Other organizations that have condemned Weinstein include 8AG-AFTRA, the Writer’s Guild of America, East, and the Producers Guild of America, which expelled Weinstein.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the DGA wholeheartedly condemns sexual harrassment, and says that there “must be no tolerance for such deplorable abuses of power. This isn’t about one person. We must recognize sexual harassment is endemic in our society, and painfully, in our industry.”
