Dog Becomes Prisoner Of War

Dogs have been loyal companions to acting members of the military, and some have even served their country alongside their humans. Yet this is the first video showing one as a prisoner of war. On Feb. 5, a Twitter account linked to Taliban propaganda posted a video of a Belgian Malinois surrounded by heavily armed (and heavily bearded) men. The short footage shows the not-so-terrified dog on a tight leash while one of the men says “Allah gave victory to the mujahideen! Down with them, down with their spies!" A Taliban spokesperson, Zabiullah Mujahid, said the dog was captured during a firefight with U.S. forces in Afghanistan in December of last year. The International Security Assistance Force has confirmed that a military dog went missing last December. The vested dog, named Colonel, was wearing a GPS tracking device and a small camera. It is possible that during the encounter in December, Colonel had been doing his job to either attack or search. While he was captured during a firefight with U.S. forces, the BBC is reporting the dog belonged to a coalition partner in the British forces.
