Warning! Spoilers are ahead! Downton Abbey is probably one of the most beloved international dramas of the 2010s! Since the show’s launch in 2010, millions have tuned into to get a glimpse of the Crawley family and their servants’ lives in the early 1900s. However, the show recently was engulfed in a firestorm after it aired a controversial scene that saw Anna May Bates (Joanne Forggatt) attacked and raped by a guest’s valet. The Guardian reported that even though the rape was not seen on-screen, viewers heard Anna’s attacker hit her and she returned to the scene with cuts and bruises to the face. “If we'd wanted a sensational rape, we could have stayed down in the kitchen with the camera during the whole thing and wrung it out.” Said Downton Abbey Creator Julian Fellowes. "The point of our handling is not that we're interested in sensationalizing but we're interested in exploring the mental damage and the emotional damage.” Despite having a warning that aired before the broadcast, both BBC and Digital Spy, Ofcom (the United Kingdom’s Office of Communications) received over 244 complaints about the graphic scene that aired on October 6. While 12,000,000 people saw the episode, an Ofcom spokesperson told The Belfast Telegraph that Downton would not face an investigation due to the pre-show warning. Meanwhile, Froggat told BBC News that she not only defends the storyline, but she also was “proud the show could tackle such a weighty subject. Downton Abbey will wrap up its season on Sunday in the UK while it premieres in the US on January 5, 2014. http://www.Twitter.com/PopWrapped https://pop-wrapped.tumblr.com http://www.SoundCloud.com/PopWrapped http://www.Facebook.com/PopWrapped http://www.Instagram.com/PopWrapped http://www.Pinterest.com/PopWrapped http://www.YouTube.com/PopWrapped https://pop-wrapped.wordpress.com http://www.PopWrapped.com
