Downton Abbey's Cast Grows More Diverse With Latest Addition!

Dani Strehle

Staff Writer

Last year’s season finale of Downton Abbey left us all dejected and most likely ugly-crying over the grizzly accidental death of Dan Stevens’ Matthew Crawley moments after the birth of his son and heir.

Next season will undoubtedly focus on Mary’s struggles with single parenting and how she copes with the loss of Matthew. However, next season will also realize creator Julian Fellowe’s desire to add some diversity to the cast with the addition of Gary Carr playing American jazz musician Jack Ross.

Carr’s character will be a part of the series’ fourth season, and these images are the first we’ve seen of him.

Carr is widely known for his starring role in the BBC’s Death in Paradise as quirky police officer Fidel Best and will join Nigel Harman and opera singer Dame Kiri Te as new members of the stellar cast.

Fellowes has mentioned in the past that he wanted to make Downton a more diverse environment in season 4 stating that he planned on writing a black or Indian character.

Producer Gareth Neame believes that Carr’s addition will come with “interesting twists to the drama.”

James’ Lady Rose caused quite a stir last season when she guest starred as a visiting cousin and instigated an affair with Edward Baker-Duly’s Terence Margadale.

Fellowes, unfortunately, has yet to release any details of the latest plot-line.

Downton has been kind to James who joined the case as a relatively unknown actress. Since her appearance as Lady Rose, she has been cast as Cinderella in Disney’s upcoming remake besides cate Blanchett’s portrayal of the wicked stepmother.

Check out the behind the scenes stills below from Carr’s debut:
