According to Mr. Carson, “a shaking on the ground” is coming to the new season of Downton Abbey, and I don’t think he’s referring to an earthquake. In the newly released trailer for the upcoming fifth season, one of our favorite butlers opens with quite the ominous statement. Whatever he is referring to, all I know is I cannot handle anymore deaths at Downton.

Spoiler

(for those who’ve yet to watch the series): Matthew and Sybil are about all I can handle! The first trailer showcases a lot of steamy tidbits from the upcoming season, and as EP Gareth Neame recently revealed, “In the new season, we have the high-stakes drama, the laugh-out-loud comedy and the romance. We have all of the characters doing the things people love to see them doing, but we have a few really nice twists and turns as well.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FZdk7LHQ0o Just what are those twists and turns? What about Cora exchanging glances and laughs with newcomer Richard E. Grant, Jimmy getting caught in bed with a woman, some happy moments between Mary and Tony, Lord Grantham declaring, “Our grandchild is about to be stolen from us forever!”, and a man carrying a woman through a massive fire. Is Downton burning down? In the words of Edith, “The world is changing,” and I have a feeling that also rings true for the new season. Downton Abbey returns across the pond on Sunday, Sept. 21. As for us in the states, we’ll have to wait until Jan. 4.
