EW.com has reported that Alex Kingston, known for playing River Song on Dr. Who and as Dr. Elizabeth Corday on ER has been cast in a recurring guest starring role in the CW’s superhero hit show Arrow.
Kingston will be playing the role of Dinah Lance, the mother of Dinah “Laurel” Lance as played by Katie Cassidy. And I have to say that the casting is perfect as the two actresses bear a striking resemblance.
Fans of Arrow will recall in Episode 5 “Damaged” Laurel revealed to Oliver (Stephen Amell) that her mother left her dad, Detective Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne), and her after the death of her sister Sarah, who died while on Oliver’s yacht. According to the EW.com article, Dinah comes back later this season to make amends to the family she abandoned.
Take note of Kingston’s character name of Dinah. In the Green Arrow comics, Dinah is the name of the Black Canary, the main love interest for Oliver/Green Arrow. Could she be Black Canary or will that role be reserved for her daughter, also named Dinah?
With Kingston’s casting, she becomes the second Dr. Who alum joining Arrow. John Barrowman (aka Captain Jack) is recurring as Malcolm Merlyn/Dark Archer, an adversary for Oliver’s alter ego.
