It’s been a good day for fans of The Hobbit; a slew of new images have been unveiled in anticipation of the December release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
The first, which is taken from a Harper Collins book jacket, shows Martin Freeman as Bilbo, reflected in a close up of the dragon, Smaug’s, eye.
Next is a promo image of the Dwarves in barrels heading down a fast moving river, making their escape from the dungeons of the Elves. The arrows embedded in the wood suggest that they have recently come under attack.
Third is a pair of production stills from the film. The first shows Elf Warrior, Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) poised with bow and arrow, the second is of Bilbo, sitting in a lush field surrounded by butterflies.
Finally are the front cover images for the films four upcoming tie-in books. Visual Companion, The Movie Storybook, Annual 2014, and Stickerbook.
Directed by Peter Jackson and based off the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the second part of the The Hobbit trilogy. It continues the adventure of Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.
The film stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Andy Serkis as Gollum, Elijah Wood as Frodo, as well as Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Evangeline Lilly, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Stephen Hunter, and Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released into theatres on December 13, 2013 and the third and final instalment The Hobbit: There and Back Again is scheduled for release July 18, 2014.
