Dylan O’Brien And Kurt Russell May Board Deepwater Horizon

Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien & Kurt Russell are the newest casting additions to Mark Whalberg’s upcoming film, Deepwater Horizon, about the BP oil spill.

Mark Wahlberg may soon have company in Lionsgate’s Deepwater Horizon, whose script is penned by Matthew Michael Carnahan and will be directed by Battleship helmer Peter Berg.

Kurt Russell and Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien are in talks to join the film, based on the oil-rig explosion in 2010 that spilled oil into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days and resulted in the death of eleven crew members. The film will focus on the events leading up to the explosion, as well as the consequences of the disastrous events.  Dylan O’Brien will reportedly play Caleb Holloway, the survivor of the entire ordeal. Mark Wahlberg is set to play the manager abroad the rig, whereas Russell’s role remains unknown. Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez has also been roped into the project and her role, just like Russell’s, is unknown.

The premise and execution plans of the film remind me quite a bit of The Perfect Storm, another film based on a true story that also starred Mark Wahlberg. Although O’Brien’s possible involvement is what has me excited (who doesn’t love Dylan O’Brien?), the film itself seems to be an emotional powerhouse that’s bound to hail critical acclaim.

Deepwater Horizon will open in theaters September 30th, 2016.
