In an age where everything old is new again, The CW is rebooting classic primetime soap Dynasty.
But unlike other recent reboots, 90210 (The CW), Melrose Place (The CW) and Dallas (TNT), the new Dynasty will not be a continuation of the original series. This gives The CW some more freedom with the script, but, at the same, it might not draw in people familiar with the original series.
“The new Dynasty follows two of America’s wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they feud for control over their fortune and their children. The series will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington, daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington, and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal, a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class,” Deadline reported.
Linda Evans portrayed the original Krystle, and the twist of having Cristal written as Hispanic makes the cast more diverse. Let’s hope that having a diverse cast isn’t just limited to one character.
The O.C. and Gossip Girl co-creators, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are writing the new series along with Sallie Patrick from Revenge. Original Dynasty creators, Richard and Esther Shapiro will be on hand to executive produce along with Schwartz and Savage.
Soaps in the 80s, both daytime and primetime, were in their heyday. Time will tell if the new Dynasty is able to recapture some of that magic. If done right, it could be soapy fun. One of the keys to making this series a success will be finding just the right actresses to portray Cristal and Fallon, since the series is built around tension between the two. Here’s hoping the reboot will include Fallon’s mother, Alexis, and recreate the original show’s best rivalry.
With the exception of Contagion, The CW has renewed its entire lineup the past two years. This could give the Dynasty reboot time to find its footing. Anyone else curious to see if any of the original cast make cameos?
In the meantime, check out a classic clip of Fallon vs Krystle.
