Ed Sheeran has set another record with his megahit “Shape Of You”. The single which currently sits at number 9 in the Billboard Hot 100 charts is now marking its 33rd straight week in the Top 10. Which is the longest stay of any song within the Billboard Top 10 since its inception.
“Shape Of You” was able to surpass the record set by two other singles, LeeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live?” and The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey’s “Closer”. Both songs remained in the Top 10 for 32 weeks straight.
“Shape Of You” is one of the lead singles of Ed Sheeran’s third studio album ÷, together with “Castle On The Hill”. It was made available for download early this year on January 6th. Sheeran together with some collaborators wrote and produced the song himself.
It was able to reach the number one spot in more than 30 countries including the Billboard 100 wherein it managed to top the chart for 12 non-consecutive weeks. With sales of more than two million three hundred thousand units it is currently the best selling single in the United States for 2017, and is the second most streamed song on Spotify’s history.
Other records set by the song includes, the longest stay at number one in the Australian charts with 15 weeks on the top. It was able to replicate this feat at the Canadian charts with 16 weeks at number one, tying with “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas and “Despacito” by Louis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber.
But of course all those records could still be broken in the future, one accolade that is safe though, is that it is the first ever number one single in the Philippines Hot 100 which was only formally launched on June 12, 2017.
There are no signs that “Shape Of You” may drop out of the Billboard top ten anytime soon, and could still remain there longer. This would further solidify his hold on the record.
Congratulations to everyone’s favorite ginger!
