Edward Snowden has quickly become a household name. For once, an actual news story has been overshadowing KimYe’s baby and Paula Deen’s racism. According to Wikipedia: “Edward Joseph Snowden (born June 21, 1983) is a former technical contractor for the National Security Agency (NSA) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee who leaked details of top-secret American and British government mass surveillance programs to the press.” Now that you’re all caught up, let’s talk about the reaction to Snowden’s actions.

Opinions seem to be split on what Snowden did. I’ve heard reactions ranging from: “wow that took some serious balls,” to “why would this guy ruin his life like this,” to “Snowden is my hero.” Most people that I know personally say that if they were in that situation, they would probably keep their mouths shut and continue to collect that fat government paycheck. Unfortunately, it’s not nearly that cut and dry.

Occasionally, we find ourselves in the midst of a moral dilemma. We hear or see something that we, and most likely society, find abhorrent, distasteful, and perhaps sinful, if you’re religious. And the conflict within comes down to this: what you can live with, and what you can’t. Snowden decided that he could not in good conscience keep this discovery to himself. And so he found a journalist (mainly Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian in London) willing to work with him – though, I use the term “willing” loosely as a breaking story like this is every journalist’s life ambition – and the world was privy to all of the sordid knowledge that Snowden had been harboring.

Snowden is reportedly hunkered down in a Russian airport waiting for the appropriate moment to emerge. Of course a number of celebrities have an opinion on all this; this is American after all. And celebrity reactions have been predominantly ones of encouragement and admiration for Snowden.

Here are a few of the tweets the celebrities have sent supporting Snowden:
