Ellen Pompeo has been starring in Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Meredith Grey for ten seasons, with an eleventh one on the way. If you hoped to see the actress playing different roles after the show's finale, she will have to disappoint you. Despite her triumphant success, she recenty stated she has no "strong desire" to maintain her acting career after the series' finale. She went on to say:
"I definitely feel myself transitioning, I don't find acting terribly empowering. For the place I am in my life... I don't necessarily want to work for other people."
Pompeo has spent the last months working as a producer, while she also started developing a satirical show for ABC Family, titled Debt and based on the novel of the same name. You shouldn't lose hope just yet, though, 'cause the actress did not call for retirement and keeps her heart and mind open regarding a return in front of the cameras. However, she does feel that she has reached the top of her skills with Grey's Anatomy and would like to experiment with different things.
"Grey's is in 97 countries or something and we've had this blessing of all these wonderful fans who still love us 10 years later. I feel like I did it and I don't have anything left to prove, and I'd like to try to challenge myself. I'd like to see if I can be something different and be successful at something different. I feel like I'm very successful at acting. For my journey, I feel like, 'OK, I did the absolute top of what I could do in television, and I'd like to try a new sport and see if I'm any good at something else'."
If you are not ready to let go of your beloved Mer just yet, calm down! You won't have to - at least not for the time being. It is not only that Pompeo renewed her contract for another couple of years on the show, but the creator, Shonda Rhimes, also stated that she does not intend to finish the series yet.
The eleventh season of Grey's Anatomy is scheduled to premiere on ABC, on September 25.
