Actor Emile Hirsch, 30, is to spend 15 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to assault on Monday.

The incident took place back in January at the Sundance Film Festival and he was charged in February. Hirsch had been drinking on the night of the assault when it was alleged he choked and knocked out Daniele Bernfeld, an executive at Paramount Studios.

Shortly after being charged, Hirsch entered rehab, a move which was announced by his lawyer who told the media:

“A few days after the incident, Emile sought help and checked himself into an alcohol rehabilitation facility, where he remains today, to ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”

Speaking in court on Monday, Hirsch said:

“I know it was completely wrong and reckless and irresponsible. I have no excuses for not remembering. I put those chemicals inside me.”

As well as serving time, Hirsch must complete 50 hours of community service and pay a fine of $4,750. After completion of his sentence and other terms, the charge will then be removed from his record.

In the eyes of Bernfeld, Hirsch has gotten off lightly. Through a statement from her lawyer, when the sentence was passed down she said:
