It was just announced that Emile Hirsch has signed on to play John Belushi in a new film about the late Saturday Night Live star’s life.

Writer and director Steven Conrad has yet to title the up-and-coming biopic. He also wrote The Pursuit of HappynessThe Weather Man, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. His fame has brought more attention to the long-awaited biopic. Todd Phillips was the original director, but he was replaced by Conrad.

Phillips told MTV in 2010: “Our goal is not to do a traditional biopic approach with it that people expect, whether you’re talking about Walk the Line or Ray. All good movies, but our goal is not to make that typical biopic. We want to make a movie that, if John Belushi saw it, he would be happy that it captured his spirit. Sometimes I feel that they don’t entirely capture the spirit of the person they’re about. Our goal is to capture the spirit of Belushi, not necessarily make a straight-ahead biopic.”

Conrad can hopefully capture the same essence of attachment to the project that Phillips did and bring Belushi to life in the untitled film

John Belushi was 33 when he died of an overdose at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. However, he had already had a heavy influence on the entertainment industry as an original SNL cast member.

Production of the film is set to begin in the spring of 2014.
