Check out EW’s exclusive first look of one of the DVD/Blu-ray extras from The Bling Ring, which is now available for purchase and downloads. The clip gives us some behind-the-scene footage of Sofia Coppola doing what, according to the cast of The Bling Ring, she does best, directing.
Coppola’s directing style involves being both an observer and someone who can pick out exactly what she thinks is needed in order to get the right shot, as evidenced in her request to Claire Julien. Julien portrays Chloe, one of the notorious group of Los Angeles teens involved in what is now referred to as the ‘Bling Ring’. The group of opportunist-teenagers who broke into the homes of, and stole from, the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan. Based on the Vanity Fair article ‘The Suspects Wore Louboutins’ by Jo Sales, The Bling Ring is an account of the lives of these thrill-seeking teenaged thieves.
Emma Watson and Taissa Farmiga, who also star in the movie as aspiring actresses/models who get a kick out of the entire ordeal, share what they think of Coppola’s directing style. With Watson describing Coppola as someone who “wants to capture something that’s very real and very authentic.” And so often allows the cast to improvise in the hopes of catching something brilliant from spontaneity. “She pulls out and captures those special moments that can only really be created in the moment.”
