Nominations (And Snubs) Announced For 67th Emmy Awards | Emmy Awards

This morning (July 16), we all found out who would be attending the party to celebrate the year in television, and who would not be attending either, as the 67th Primetime Emmy Award nominations have been announced, and there were some surprises--and notable snubs.

Starting off with my favorite section of the award show, Comedy saw some great nominees and some glaring omissions. Four-time winner Jim Parsons was completely snubbed this year. This is a shocking, but welcome, change to the category of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, a category Parsons has dominated for years now. The stage is all set for Jeffrey Tambor to win his overdue Emmy for his brilliant work on Transparent.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series was also a battlefield, and unfortunately, even making space for seven nominees wasn't good enough, as some great performers did indeed get snubbed. Jane Fonda (Grace and Frankie), Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly) and Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) were all, sadly, left off. Also snubbed was Gina Rodriguez (a popular favorite, but someone I personally didn't like very much). However, Fonda's co-star Lily Tomlin and Emmy-winner Lisa Kudrow received nominations, their first in years.

As disappointing as it was to see Kemper snubbed, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt did excellently in other categories, receiving nominations in Outstanding Comedy Series, and receiving nominations for Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski, Jon Hamm, and Tina Fey. Modern Family, thankfully, continues to slowly fade away, with only two actors gaining nominations - Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen. Compare this to previous years, where six actors received nominations from this show. Could this be the year where Modern Family stops dominating?

On the Drama side, there were very few surprises. Taraji P. Henson gained her second nomination, but her first for her iconic performance in Empire. Viola Davis gained her first Emmy nomination for How to Get Away with Murder. However, Kerry Washington was snubbed and replaced with the much more deserving Tatiana Maslany (Scandal was completely shut out in the major categories). New shows Better Call Saul and Bloodline received major nominations.

Finally, the Movie/Miniseries categories were pretty conventional, with expected nominees receiving their recognition. Notable snubs here include Frances Conroy for American Horror Story: Freak Show and Jonathan Pryce in Wolf Hall.

You can view the full list of nominees over at the official Emmy Awards website.
