I got the chance to sit down with British singer/songwriter Emma McGann to talk about her new single “Cherry On Top” and also to learn a bit more about this rising British songstress!

Emma started her career performing at open mic nights and recently graduated with a first degree in Music Composition and was awarded Studyvox FM Musician of the Year 2010 by Kylie Minogue! Kylie herself has given Emma praise, saying that Emma is “fantastic.”  Nancy Sinatra has praised Emma, saying “Emma McGann has sweetness, with an edge.”

Wow, that’s pretty impressive Emma!

When asked who inspired her, Emma gushed that she is “lucky enough to have creative friends who I’m surrounded by a lot of the time. The fam are forever supportive (Hi Mum!). I’m constantly inspired by the people that listen to my music as well. They’re what it’s all about.”

Aw, how sweet!

Not surprisingly, Miss Minogue is one of Emma’s favorite singers. “Kylie rocks. It’s good to see her back in the UK for The Voice. She’s a pop legend. I’m yet to find a Kylie song that I don’t enjoy. She’s given me some good advice in the past too.” Her musical influences include, “Charleen Spiteri, Shirley Manson, Beth Hart,” says Emma. “When you’re at that age of locking yourself in your room with your headphones on, whatever you’re listening to tends to sink in and stick with you. They’ll always be huge influences to me.”

Emma goes on to say she’d “love to collab with P!nk. She’s got that tough female vibe that you can’t help but love. I can be a bit of a tomboy too so I can relate to her style. Her live shows are just insane. Did you see her performance at the Grammys? She was incredible!”

Yes we agree Emma! We would love to see you collaborate with P!nk.

Where does she want to be in a year? “I want to be making bigger waves in the pop world. I’d like to squeeze a holiday in somewhere between now and 2015 too! But as long as I’m writing, performing and meeting new fans along the way I’ll be a happy bunny wherever I am.”

Songwriting for the young starlet is all about “being in the moment.” Though she says “It’s hard to explain, but it just kind of hits you out of the blue. You’re like ‘Whoa! Where did this kickass melody come from?’. They just pop into your head sometimes. Once you’ve figured out what or who your muse is and what really excites you, that’s when it get’s easier.”

Her single, “Cherry On Top” (watch below) is all about love says Emma, “I’m sure there’s plenty of girls out there who can say they’ve fallen for one of the bad boys. And that’s what “Cherry On Top” is about. It’s about making that mistake and falling for someone too fast. You’re so blinded by lust that you want to give them everything all at once. It’s fine to make those mistakes – just learn from them and don’t make the same mistake twice.”

Emma continued, “I’m very proud of ‘Cherry On Top’ I had the most fun writing it in the studio. But I’m working on another record at the moment to release in the Summer. I can’t decide which I like best. Maybe you guys can decide for me when it’s released later this year.”

Emma’s starstuck moment would make any girl (or guy!) swoon! “I saw Harry Styles getting into a car once in London and raced towards him. There were fangirls EVERYWHERE. They were frantically trying to push all these fan-made photos, pants, dolls through the car window. It was absolute mayhem! All I had at the time in my hands was my lunch (a potato salad). I was so caught up in the moment that I actually offered him a baby potato. That was a weird moment.”

Sharing is caring, Emma.

Emma McGann’s new single “Cherry On Top’” will be available worldwide on 17th March, so be sure to pre-order it on iTunes here: http://smarturl.it/CherryOnTop.
