@CincyBenMany a Gleek were fans of Oxygen's short lived competition series The Glee Project; where a group of aspiring thespians battled it out (in a manner of speaking) for a role on Fox's hit show, Glee. Season 1 brought us the more recognizable names like Alex Newell (now season regular, Unique), as well as winners Samuel Larsen and Damien McGinty. Season 2's talent pool brought the likes of Ali Stroker and Aylin Bayramoglu, as well as winner Blake Jenner, who also became a regular on Glee. Fans have kept up with their favorites over the years; Ellis Wylie, Hannah McIalwain, Cameron Mitchell, Lily Mae Harrington, Michael Weisman and Dani Shay, but who could forget the funny and loveable, Charlie Lubeck?! I certainly haven't forgotten, so I tracked down Charlie so we could find out what he's been up to since his time on the show.
What is the biggest thing that has changed in your life since The Glee Project? To be honest, not a lot has changed since the show. Not in a bad way, of course! But I think I went into it with a shining ideal; this notion that being seen on this kind of level would somehow make groceries less expensive, make rent never be due on time, etc. In short, there was a stretch of time where I felt entitled to the good life, like I would just show up, flash a smile, and it would roll out in front of me like a magical carpet. The kind of life that I'm now kicking myself in the ass and actually trying hard to WORK for. But being on a reality show, more than any other type of show, tends to warp your perspective for a little while.
There were 3 contestants from Chicago, IL - were you friends prior, and are you still friends? We weren't friends before, which geographically makes sense. I think I lived about an hour away from either Michael and Aylin. But on the show, we became thick as thieves. There are some memories I have of that experience that I wouldn't trade for anything. No matter what happens, I'll always have their backs.
What projects have you been working on since The Glee Project? Here's what's been going on. For a long time, I was looking around for a local producer for my EP, Shake the Dreamer, and then one day, I woke up and said, "You know what, Charles, no one's gonna do this for you, so do it yourself!" Since then, I've been learning about audio production, and working with a great dude named Ryan, in NoHo. This album is gonna arrive come hell or high water, but I can't lie and say it's been easy. The more I learn, the more I'm astounded at what I don't know. In the mean time, I'm getting out and playing shows whenever I can.
What is something that fans would be surprised to learn about you?I think fans got a chance to see the best version of me on The Glee Project; the creative, extroverted eccentric. What might surprise some people is that I've actually struggled with depression for a long time. I have a personality that seeks out novelty, that craves new experiences to be happy. During the time that I wasn't doing anything, it was like I was walking through mist. I never looked up, never ahead. Eyes on the ground. It was a very tough time. I'm so relieved to be beyond that place now. It helps to keep moving. Always keep moving.
What can you tell us about your song; what inspired it.Actually, I'd say 'inspired' is the best way to put it! I was hanging out with my friend Dani Bell from San Diego (we've actually already released a cover of 'Infinity' by The XX I think you'd really like! Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2I-EzsJ2ew) It was just one of those days that makes a soap bubble around you; like all the bad things just quietly drift away. And I remember very distinctly, I was playing her bass and came up with this riff based off of "Come Together" by The Beatles, and from there, the lyrics were written in about 10 minutes. I LOVE when that happens. I mean, how cool is it that you spend so much time toying around with ideas, and then BAM. Like a small miracle just poured out of your mouth.
Is there an album on the way?YES! I know I've said that for over a year now, but it's on the way, I promise!
