Facebook has made another pricey purchase in the hopes of controlling more mobile media. WhatsApp was acquired for a startling sum of $19 billion. Yes, billion.
WhatsApp is a messaging app for smartphones with upwards of 450 million users. The app allows people to connect through phone numbers and uses broadband, making it more cost effective; the app only costs a dollar!
Facebook mogul, Mark Zuckerberg, says he doesn’t plan on driving revenue through WhatsApp just yet. He’s more interested in growing the app. They are interested in the long run, not immediate profits.
This is a great success for Jan Koum and Brian Acton, the founders of the app. After leaving their jobs at Yahoo! Acton tried to get a job at Facebook and was denied. When one door closes another opens (and gives you billions of dollars).
